Benson Mule Days, 2010

Benson Mule Days is a week-long festival that draws equine enthusiasts from around the country to the small North Carolina town on the outskirts of Raleigh. Rodeos, carnival rides, free concerts and street fairs draw the crowds in, but the excitement and camaraderie experienced while spending a few days camping out with thousands of other riders is what keeps most Mule Days veterans coming back each year.

Benson, N.C. — Life in the Mule City

Kristen and I moved to Benson, N.C., two years ago to pursue new careers and start a family. A small bedroom community to Raleigh, Benson is affectionally known as the Mule City because of its rich history of agriculture. This ongoing project is my effort to document the complex dynamics of life in a small town.

Portraiture

Elizabeth City – Harbor of Hospitality

For Easter, Kristen and I travelled to Elizabeth City, a small harbor town at the mouth of the Pasquotank River, near the northern end of the Outer Banks. Our goal was simply to get away from home and be someplace peaceful and quite, knowing this would likely be our last chance to travel together before Samuel was born. The images in this gallery are varied in subject and mood, but I love this one in particular because of the absence of a well defined horizon. The fog totally blurs the boundary between the sea and the sky, while the viewer remains safely behind the (confining?) rail of the dock.
